Individual Therapy

Conversations are efforts toward good relations. They are an elementary form of reciprocity. They are the exercise of our love for each other. They are the enemies of our loneliness, our doubt, our anxiety, our tendencies to abdicate. To continue to be in good conversation over our enormous and terrifying problems is to be calling out to each other in the night. If we attend with imagination and devotion to our conversations, we will find what we need; and someone among us will act—it does not matter whom—and we will survive.”

~ Barry Lopez

Individual therapy can help you by creating a safe, supportive environment in which to resolve the issues that are troubling you. I will help you get clarity on your situation.

Often, people come to therapy because they have become “stuck” in inflexible patterns of thinking, feeling, behaving, and relating.  Entering therapy begins the process of gaining a better awareness of oneself and the ways in which we enter relationships or circumstances that are less than rewarding. Through therapy, you will receive support to make realistic decisions and changes, as well as gain the emotional and cognitive insight and skills you need to rebuild your confidence, feel better about yourself and your relationships.

Approach

I use an integrative approach to individual psychotherapy combining insight and skills- based perspectives. For some clients, an insight-oriented or mindfulness approach works well. Others may benefit from a combination of relational or cognitive/behavioral approaches, coupled with learning concrete skills for addressing issues. I believe therapy works best when it is tailored to the personality and the individual needs of each patient. Rather than relying on just one of the many modern approaches to psychotherapy, I draw from several disciplines, including psychodynamic and relational psychotherapy, existential and attachment theory. Additionally, my work is informed and influenced by the field of neuroscience and it’s application and relevance to the practice of psychotherapy.

Regardless of which theoretical model is used, I place a great deal of emphasis on the therapeutic relationship and believe strongly in the importance of collaboration between client and therapist and the empowerment of the individual seeking help. My interactions with you will be based upon your needs and not on my adherence to one particular theoretical framework.

I believe that the foundation of a successful treatment is a strong working alliance and an understanding of each client’s individualized goals. The foundation of my approach is client-centered and non-judgmental. I am both direct and empathic and work from a stance of respect and curiosity with an aim to cultivate a safe emotional environment for meaningful therapeutic work.

I am committed to helping each person develop greater self-awareness, personal growth, and positive change.
